What Are Best Practices For Food Photos?

Customers are 30% more likely to order menu items with photos. In order to maximize conversion rates, we recommend having professional photos for all menu items PRIOR to launching your brand. Here are some tips: 

Plating 

• Make sure all the ingredients are visible. Cut open and stack the two halves of foods that hides ingredients (e.g. sandwiches, burritos)
• Keep the plate simple and organized but feel free to add some garnish. Just make sure it still represents what a customer would expect to receive.
• Try to capture the essence of your brand by using a variety of surfaces, plateware, glassware, napkins, and silverware. However, remember that the food is still the focus.
• Be careful not to misrepresent the portion size of the meal by plating it in oversized or undersized dishware

Photography 

• Uniform, clear, and appetizing 
• Top-down (90 degree angle) works well for plates of food or bowls. If ingredients are not visible, Isometric (45 degree) angles or Profile (10 degree) might be a better option (such as for burgers and vertical items)
• Photos must match a single dish
• Avoid busy backgrounds. Let the food be the star of the show. 
• Make sure food is well lit, avoid harsh shadows
• Images cannot contain logos, watermarks, text or words

Delivery Platform Size Requirements

We recommend creating a Google Drive or Dropbox and uploading all your pictures into there so they can easily be shared. Name each photo exactly the name of the item that the photo is associated with on your menu so the delivery platforms can help you upload. Note that some delivery platforms can take about 1 week to approve uploaded photos so start early.

  • Photo should not be blurry. 
  • Photo should not include misleading products not sold by restaurant.
  • Watermarks, logos, collages, text, and borders are not allowed.
